Workshop Schedule and Registration

All sessions will be in Steen Library 219, unless noted otherwise.

Registering for a workshop is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

  1. Select one or more workshops and click the checkboxes for the times you wish to attend.

Fundamental Instructional Technology Skills - (FITS)

These workshops are for faculty and staff who want to develop basic computer skills.

This series is designed to build a strong foundation of skills for faculty who would like to use technology in their courses. It is also a prerequisite for the Online Instructor Certification series.

All faculty intending to sign up for the Online Instructor Certification Series must complete FITS.

If you are interested in demonstrating proficiency ("CLEPing"), contact Melane at mmcculler@sfasu.edu.

FITS 1: File Management (1 hour)
Identify and choose file management structure. Identify file extensions and their icons. Create, save, compress and move files. Work with folders. PC or MAC.

FITS 2: Communications (1 hour)
Identify different forms of electronic communications. Select and use an email program. Log on to mySFA's email, discussion area and chat to learn several key features.

FITS 3: Web Page Design (1.5 hour)
Work with Mozilla Composer to design web pages. Practice uploading, using an FTP client or myCourses.

These workshops are recommended for faculty who desire to learn the basic features of myCourses (Blackboard Learning System) to electronically provide course enhancements and grade book for campus-based courses.

A brief introduction to the file management system and content tools will enable posting handouts and web links.

myCourses Workshops (Blackboard Learning Systems--BLS)

These Web Course Tools workshops are for faculty who want to learn to use myCourses (Blackboard Learning Systems) to provide course enhancements or fully Web-based courses. The 10 hands-on workshops may be completed in any order after the Introduction to myCourses session. The set of three online workshops are an alternate and equivalent option for those who prefer self-directed learning. You may attend both face-to-face workshops and online modules concurrently if desired.

If you are interested in completing BLS by way of the online modules, please register for a hands-on Introduction to myCourses session and the online modules below.

BLS-Intro: Introduction to myCourses - Certification track (1 hour)
The curriculum will review the basics of logging on and navigating myCourses; an overview of the interface and global settings, copying or importing course content, e-paks,
support information, PowerLink use and management, setting the mySFA link, and introduction to the Certified Online Instructor process.

Create and distribute course text-based (such as paragraphs, essays, research papers, and PowerPoint presentations) and web-based assignments (single or multi-page web sites) to your students, publish, evaluate, and assign a grade to the completed work.

BLS- Online: Online Workshop Modules
The three modules are self-paced, comprehensive, and interactive.
  1. Designing with WebCT (Blackboard)
  2. Teaching with WebCT (Blackboard)
  3. Creating and Managing Groups, Assignments and Assessments
When you register for the Online Workshop Modules, you will be enrolled in both the workshop modules and associated practice courses. If other participants register at the same time, you will be able to collaborate. The workshops include informative text, interactive Flash components, practice exercises, and completion assessments. All of the primary Blackboard Learning System tools are covered in the series. You may attend the hands-on workshops to enhance or supplement or replace any online section. Completion quizzes at the end of each module verify learning. Upon completion, an appointment for a proficiency check will be scheduled.

Online Instructor Certification Series

This series is for faculty who plan to deliver online courses.

The Certified Online Instructor (COI) Certification Series is for faculty who wish to become a Certified Online Instructor. The following should be completed in the order listed:

1. Fundamentals of Instructional Technology (FITS) or equivalent experience demonstrated. If you are interested in an appointment to demonstrate proficiency, contact Melane at mmcculler@sfasu.edu.

2. myCourses Workshops (BLS) (Intro plus nine hands-on workshops, OR Intro plus successful completion of the three online modules).

3. Web Course Design (WCD) Community (eight modules).

4. Creating Web Pages in Dreamweaver (SAMS-DW) (may be taken concurrently with WCD either one-on-one or in a group as needed.)

The FITS and BLS series of workshops must be completed as prerequisites to be eligible to sign up for the Web Course Design Community online course. Faculty who wish to deliver a fully online course should contact the Distance Education Coordinator, Gail Weatherly, at gweatherly@sfasu.edu or by phone at 468-1818.

Master Online Instructor - (MOI)

This series is for experienced online instructors.

Workshop Objectives

This 10-hour series of workshops is designed for faculty who have already completed the WCD series and are wanting to master the skills that make myCourses such a robust tool. The format is highly collaborative, and some components take advantage of online participation.
Prerequisite: Certified Online Instructor and one semester teaching online

 
MOI - Q: Advanced Assessments (2 hours)
Discuss the use of question sets, calculated questions, adding images or sound in a quiz, scenarios, and html enhancements. Discuss methods and effective tools for preventing cheating.

These sessions will explore how to leverage Google to discover valuable and hidden resources on the Web for inclusion in course content.

SAMS-E - Elluminate (1 hour)
Find out how this online collaboration tool will help you extend the boundaries of the traditional classroom or add real-time interaction to your existing web course. Administrators will also find Elluminate useful for conducting meetings while reducing travel costs and saving time.

This session will be held online, so you can stay in your office. Instructions will be forwarded to you upon registration. Elluminate is both Mac and PC friendly.

In this session we will explore how to create digital video content for streaming media, DVD, and more.

Learn the basics of creating web pages in Dreamweaver for instructional use; includes design principles, page creation, and inserting graphics, links, and tables. 

Faculty participating in the Online Instructor Certification Series (above) will use Dreamweaver to create course modules and will be given opportunities to learn Dreamweaver after beginning the Web Course Development Series.

Includes page and lesson creation, and inserting graphics, links, tables, and a variety of interactive learning activities to engage students. The completed lessons can be used in myCourses or as stand-alone web content.

What is the quickest, most convenient way for faculty to record and place lectures and recordings online? Register for this workshop and join us to find out how this method of delivery can be advantageous for both yourself and your students.

Learn to create exams in the campus-wide licensed program,Respondus,for both pencil-and-paper versions and electronic versions that can be exported to myCourses. Learn to use the same files to create Studymate modules for web use (flash cards, crosswords,Jeopardy-like knowledge games, self-tests, etc.) Respondus lockdown browser prevents several kinds of cheating during online tests in myCourses.

Learn the basics of Photoshop Elements; includes opening images, resizing images and canvases, basics of image adjustment (brightness, contrast, color replacement), layers, and navigating the tool bars. Includes preparing graphics for print or use in a Web environment
