Videoconferencing - Interactive Television (ITV)
General videoconferencing information:
Videoconferencing is relatively similar to a telephone call, but it also
includes a video signal. Cameras and microphones in a classroom or conference
room capture both video and audio. Then, a device called a codec compresses
this input into data and sends it via dedicated circuits, Internet or wireless
to another location, sometimes thousands of miles away! People at both locations
can collaborate, almost as if they were together in person.
How is videoconferencing
being used at SFA?
Videoconferencing (ITV)
is not new to SFA, but the technology related to it is constantly advancing.
Stephen F. Austin State University utilizes several protocols to deliver
videoconferencing for instructional and administrative needs. Our multi-classroom
videoconference systems offer a wide range of connectivity options. Most
of our on-campus systems are H.323 compliant, which means they can operate
using a standard Ethernet connection in a classroom or office. By using
these units, we can have a portable system set up quickly and harness the
flexibility of our campus network, without the need for costly, dedicated
circuit connections that are only available in a few select classrooms.
We can establish connections with other high-bandwidth partners who also
have IP-based systems to deliver compressed video over the Internet. Another
benefit is being able to take advantage of SFA's Internet
2 connectivity when videoconferencing to other members or pier networks.
The Northeast Texas Network Consortium
(NETnet), provides high-quality connectivity to SFA and other affiliated
institutions throughout East Texas. Through this consortium, SFA also has
access to ISDN-based connectivity for placing toll calls to virtually anywhere.
How can you
use it?
Videoconferencing
can be used for various types of meetings and special events where people
are not able to physically meet. It is ideal for guest speakers and lecturettes.
It may also be used to reach students at distant locations, who otherwise
would not be able to attend classes at SFA. If you have questions about
how you can utilize ITV to help accomplish your mission, please contact
Randy Watson.
Does OIT
offer Training?
OIT offers a comprehensive series of workshops in our Certified
ITV Instructor Workshop Series. These worshops were designed to help
faculty or administrative staff comfortably switch from a traditional
face-to-face class or conference room venue, to an ITV setting. To see when this series is offered, please visit our workshop
registration page.
What's coming with "next-generation"
videoconferencing technology?
Connectivity will continue to get better and better. SFA has been and
will continue to be involved in the development of the Lonestar
Education and Research Network (LEARN), which will inter-connect many
instuitutions around the state at very high band rates by utilizing dark
fiber.
High definition will also begin to filter into the world of videoconferencing.
As band rates improve, the doors also open for better connection rates,
thus allowing the 1280 x 720 pixel resolution (HDTV) signals to be transmitted.
Many new products are coming out this year and we will be evaluating them
for possible test implementation in select classrooms for 2007.
