Videoconferencing
- Interactive Television (ITV)

What is it?
Videoconferencing is similar to a video telephone call. Cameras
and microphones in a classroom or conference room capture both video and
audio. Then, a device called a codec compresses this input into data and
sends it via dedicated circuits, Internet or wireless to another location,
sometimes thousands of miles away! People at both locations can collaborate,
almost as if they were together, in person.
How is videoconferencing
being used at SFA?
Videoconferencing or ITV is
not new to SFA, but the technology involved and the ways that this type
of conference can be delivered are constanting progressing. Stephen F.
Austin State University utilizes several methods to deliver this type
of instruction. Our multi-classroom videoconference systems offer a wide-range
of connectivity options. Most of our on-campus systems are H.323 compliant,
which means they can operate using a standard network connection in a
classroom or office. By using the H.323 compliant units, we can have a
portable system set up in minutes and harness the flexibility of our campus
network, without the need for costly dedicated circuit connections that
are only available in a few select classrooms or areas. We can collaborate
with other high-bandwidth partners who also have IP-based systems to deliver
compressed video over the Internet. Another benefit is being take advantage
of SFA's Internet 2 connectivity when videoconferencing to other institutions
around the state and nation who also have connectivity with I2. We are
currently delivering several classes by utilizing Internet 2 connectivity.
Our newest partner, Northeast Texas Network (Netnet), gives us high-quality
connectivity to 15 other institutions and many affiliates throughout East
Texas. Netnet also gives us connectivity to more traditional, ISDN-based
based videoconference systems, where we can connect virtually anywhere
by toll.
How can you
use it?
Compressed video
can be used for various types of meetings and special events where people
are not able to physically meet. It is ideal for guest speakers and lecturettes.
It may also be used to reach students at distant locations, who otherwise,
would not be able to attend SFA. If you have questions about how you can
utilize ITV to help accomplish your mission, please contact Randy
Watson.
